Inspiring the Future of IT
“Kids get pushed so quickly through school and out into the workforce that they never get to actually experience what they’re choosing to do for the rest of their lives,” says Jake Bingen, senior consulting engineer in our Milwaukee office. That’s why he became a mentor for Pewaukee High School’s Insight Program.
Insight gives high school students real-world immersion experiences in a professional setting. The program matches students with mentors in healthcare, teaching, business, engineering, journalism – and IT.
Earlier this year, Jake was matched with a high school senior named Jack Borckmann. Jack was interested in IT but wasn’t sure whether he wanted to go into the computer science side or the infrastructure side.
Jake arranged for Jack to spend a day at one of his key clients, GA Larson. Jack shadowed GA Larson’s business analyst Jon Grady for some computer programming experience. And he shadowed Jake to learn more about infrastructure. By the end of the day, thanks to this hands-on experience, Jack discovered he liked the infrastructure side.
“I think it’s important for students to see what they think they want to do before they actually do it as a career,” says Jake.
“For me, I knew what I wanted to do at 14 when I built my first computer and it blew up in smoke. But not everyone has that ‘a-ha’ moment,” he says. “If I can be the spark that shows a person what IT is and how we solve problems, then I’ll try to be there for that person.”
Thank you to Rob Sunderlage, Jon Grady, and GA Larson for giving Jack an invaluable day-in-the-life experience in IT.
